Small Town Natural: Why Buy Bamboo clothing?

Bamboo fabric is silky soft! It is very breathable, antibacterial, sweat wicking, water absorbing, quick drying, and adjusts to the temperature needs of your body (heat & cool).

Aside from being one of the world’s most renewable resources bamboo is great for many reasons!

Did you know there are 1,000 bamboo species? These species are used for different purposes. It can grow in so many climates that it could cover around ¾ of earth’s land. Bamboo doesn’t disturb soil as much as other crops because it does not require the entire plant be removed to harvest. Cutting the branches off the main plant, it can regenerate those shoots making it an incredible renewable and regenerative resource. It is one of the fastest growing plants on our planet. Bamboo needs very little water to grow and no chemicals nor pesticides are needed to grow a crop of bamboo. The carbon footprint is lower for bamboo than most other crops since the use of petroleum consuming farming equipment is not needed. Yet another added benefit is that it produces more oxygen than trees.

The downside of bamboo viscose/rayon and fleece (although still more environmentally friendly than cotton or synthetic fabrics) is that the process to turn the raw materials into a fabric uses chemicals and water that ends up making bamboo rayon the equal to organic cotton fabric. Which isn’t so bad, however it could be better if we find a way to reduce the use of chemicals and reduce water consumption in the processing of the raw bamboo. There are more types of bamboo fabric that may be more sustainable and environmentally friendly like bamboo lyocell which is one of the most eco-friendly fabrics made from bamboo. I will explain why in future blogs.
